MANNY PACQUIAO: Looking Back to June 23, 2001 vs. Lehlohonolo Ledwaba, undercard fight for the OSCAR DE LA HOYA Main Event

It's ironic how life could be. Manny Pacquiao was just having his debut fight in the U.S. on June 23, 2001 against IBF Super Bantamweight Champion Lehlohonolo Ledwaba as an undercard for the Oscar De la Hoya main event fight. Nobody inside the arena even Pacquiao himself would know that 7 years and a half later Pacquiao and De la Hoya would clash with one another for the biggest event in boxing history.

Here's a video, Manny Pacquiao winning the IBF Super Bantamweight belt from Lehlohonolo Ledwaba, circa June 23, 2001.

This is going to be a worldwide event where not only Filipinos will be watching me fight one of the best fighters in the sport of boxing and probably one of the richest and most influential superstars in all of sports. Everyone will be watching.

Speak little English pa ako noon. May interpreter pa ako noon.

Ako naman ang 122-pound champion that time.

Seven years more from 2001 and 25 pounds heavier, I will face the man who I admired most for his speed and wisdom in the ring. Oscar and I will be fighting for boxing's most glorious win in the 147-pound limit.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think and imagine that I will be fighting the same man who was then a superstar and is still the sport's biggest draw. But I believe that after seven years of fighting, I have grown better, more mature and wiser as a fighter and as a person. I also know that I have the capability of scoring an upset over my boyhood idol.

God bless us all.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA Says Dec. 6, 2008 Will Not Be His Last Fight

snapshot by Rastaman

Las Vegas Review-Journal DailyLine column reports that 'Golden Boy' puts off talk of retirement and has eye on Pacquiao. De la Hoya's destiny with the Pacman on Dec. 6, 2008 won't be his last fight, a final fight would have to wait until 2009. "I'm not going to talk about retirement," De la Hoya said Thursday. "My focus is on training, fighting and winning. We'll see how I feel after the fight if it's my last fight."

"I don't want it to be the focus of this fight." De la Hoya said of the possibility of this being his last fight. "I'm not closing the door on anything. Let's just say my foot got caught in the door."

"I do have to change my style around," De la Hoya said. "I have to adjust to his [Pacquiao] speed. I have to figure out a way to pull the trigger, and I have to find a way to increase my speed." obviously refferring to Freddie Roach (De la Hoya's trainer in Mayweather fight) statement that De la Hoya can't "pull the trigger anymore."

"I know I can still do this." De la Hoya said. "My reflexes are still there. My speed and strength is still there."

The article provides an insight on Oscar De la Hoya's thoughts, a range of emotion which could result to a lot of things. One thing is for sure, the fight will be spectacular.

De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight is set
The biggest bout in years, supposedly called off 10 days ago, will take place in Las Vegas on Dec. 6.
Bill Dwyre, LA TIMES

1:00 PM PDT, August 27, 2008
The biggest boxing match in years will, indeed, take place. Oscar De La Hoya has agreed to a Dec. 6 match with rising superstar Manny Pacquiao.

The official announcement, barring last-minute reversals, will be made in a conference call Thursday morning.

The match, the grand finale of 35-year-old De La Hoya's unprecedented career as the box-office king in a sport that has survived on his back for more than 10 years without a dominant heavyweight, will be held at the MGM Grand Hotel Garden in Las Vegas. The pay-per-view will be available on HBO.

Ten days ago, Richard Schaefer, De La Hoya's partner in the operation of Golden Boy Promotions, and Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank had announced that negotiations for the much-anticipated fight had broken down and it would not take place. Schaefer and De La Hoya wanted a 70-30% split of receipts, which would include a projected 2-million-plus pay-per-view buys. Arum and Pacquiao had balked and the deal was off.

In the interim, as recently as two days ago, stories had appeared that the front-runner to replace Pacquiao on De La Hoya's farewell card was promoter Dan Goossen's Paul Williams, who had a victory over Antonio Margarito. Margarito, who is from Mexico, was the recent surprise winner over Miguel Cotto in a fight that was to set up De La Hoya's next opponent.

But when Margarito won, that took the Puerto Rican Cotto out of the picture and De La Hoya had said all along that he did not want his farewell fight to be against a fellow Mexican. De La Hoya, of Mexican heritage, was raised in East Los Angeles and won an Olympic gold medal for the United States.

But the Williams talks apparently were mostly wishful thinking, and De La Hoya agreed to drop his percentage of the take in a Pacquiao bout to a two-thirds/one-third arrangement.

They will fight at 147 pounds.

Pacquiao, 29, the most celebrated and recognized athlete in the Philippines, has won titles at five lower weights and is more comfortable around 136-140 pounds. De La Hoya has won multiple titles and is more comfortable around 154.

The largest pay-per-view fight in boxing history was the 2007 match between De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr., won by the now-retired Mayweather. That drew 2.4 million buys. De La Hoya previously was involved in the largest non-heavyweight pay-per-view fight when he suffered his first loss, in 1999, against Felix Trinidad.

De La Hoya will take a record of 39-5 with 30 knockouts into the fight. Pacquiao's record is 47-3-2, with 35 knockouts.

Sources: De La Hoya, Pacquiao agree to Dec. 6 fight in Vegas

By Dan Rafael
ESPN.com
Updated: August 27, 2008, 1:13 PM ET

Oscar De La Hoya, boxing's biggest star, will announce Thursday that he will meet pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao on Dec. 6, two sources close to the fight told ESPN.com.

Top Rank's Bob Arum, whose company promotes Pacquiao, would not confirm a deal was in place for what would be the year's biggest fight, but he did tell ESPN.com that De La Hoya would host a media teleconference at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday to announce his opponent.

"We'll know who is he is fighting tomorrow," Arum said Wednesday from Youngstown, Ohio, where he was attending a promotional event for the Kelly Pavlik-Bernard Hopkins fight that he is co-promoting with De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions. "I made a commitment that I wouldn't say anything and that tomorrow there would be an announcement. I'm not allowed to make any comments. Everything will be clear on Thursday."

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer would not confirm the deal, either, but sounded positive when asked about it.

"Last week the deal was 90 percent dead, but we were able to revive it. The fact that it has been so quiet is a good sign," Schaefer said from Mexico, where he was traveling on business with De La Hoya. "It's been a lot of back and forth and skillful negotiating and to try to get each side to soften their stance. If the fight was Arum vs. Schaefer, it would have been made awhile ago."

Schaefer dismissed reports this week that welterweight titleholder Paul Williams was under serious consideration to meet De La Hoya. Schaefer said that although Williams' name was thrown out during an internal meeting, it was quickly dismissed, and no contact was ever made between the De La Hoya and Williams camps. Williams promoter Dan Goossen confirmed that as well.

De La Hoya (39-5, 30 KOs), who has repeatedly said the December fight would be the last bout of his storied career in which he's won world titles in six weight divisions, has been in talks with Pacquiao (47-3-2, 35 KOs) for weeks. But negotiations got bogged down when the sides could not come to an agreement on how to split the revenue, which is expected to exceed more than $100 million.

De La Hoya stood firm for weeks on a 70-30 split in his favor; Pacquiao was demanding a 40 percent slice of the pie.

The rest of the major issues, from the maximum weight to the size of the gloves, were agreed upon, with Pacquiao getting his way on a 147-pound weight limit and 8-ounce gloves.

The percentage split that De La Hoya and Pacquiao have apparently agreed to is unclear.

Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer and one of De La Hoya's former trainers, has been an outspoken advocate of the fight, going so far as to say he would train Pacquiao for free because he was so confident he would win.

Roach told ESPN.com on Wednesday that Pacquiao, whom he hadn't spoken to much recently, left him two voice mails about 7 a.m. ET.

"He left me the messages and at the end of one of them, he said, 'Thanks for all your help.' I read that as the fight is done," Roach said.

Pacquiao, a lightweight titleholder who has won belts in five weight classes and is the national icon of the Philippines, would move up to welterweight for the showdown with De La Hoya.

The fight is expected to take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where De La Hoya has fought five of his past six bouts and seven of his past 10.

As with the previous series as well as the next series. Nagahama only directed this series. The actual creator was Saburo Hatte, which is actually a pseudonym that refers to the staff of Toei (the main division, not the animation studio) as a collective whole.

Mr. Dela Hoya, let do this fight, once and for all, Liham Para Kay Ginoong De La Hoya

"Kumbinasyon"

By Manny Pacquiao

17 Aug 2008

I am a fighter and my job is to get ready for every fight. I do not fear any opponent and my fans know that I do not run from any challenge. That is why I have always been selected as the Most Exciting Fighter in the world, and later on, the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. I thank the people who love boxing for giving me the title and I think I deservingly earned those titles.

I do not choose my opponents and I certainly do not run from any challenge especially the ones that I think I have a chance to win. I know that Mr. Dela Hoya will come into the fight a bigger man, but my team thinks we have a winning shot, however small it may be. That is why talks have started between Top Rank and Golden Boy, which Mr. Dela Hoya heads.

I think this fight should happen if Mr. Dela Hoya really loves the sport of boxing. This fight will be our legacy to the sport, especially because it will be Mr. Dela Hoya's last fight. People have started talking about it and we have not even signed our names on the contract. I'm sure we can fill up Dodger Stadium or any other venue. Yes, I will fight anywhere, anytime. Boxing's "Golden Boy" Vs. Boxing's Most Exciting Fighter and the current top Pound-for-Pound fighter: A Dream Match.

Mr. Dela Hoya, however, has shown little interest by offering me a percentage that only an up-and-coming fighter rightly deserves. If he really wants the fight, then he should at least, at the very least give me what I truly deserve, a fair share of the pie. He should understand that we are both superstars in the game and our mere names will sell everything and we stand to break all existing records in the sport, even the one that he established with Floyd Mayweather.

Mr. Dela Hoya, this fight is going to be better than the Mayweather fight because as you may already know, I will not be running away from you. It will be a fight for the ages, even our grandkids will be talking about this match even when we are already old. Don't let the opportunity pass.

Mr. Dela Hoya, let do this fight, once and for all, for our love for boxing. I will continue to wait. Have a nice day! Oh, by the way, I have been playing golf lately but I can't come to your golf charity on Monday even if I really wanted to help out in your charity movement, too.

Hanggang sa muling Kumbinasyon. God Bless Us All.

Filipino viewers of the Beijing Olympic Games coverage may have felt rightfully disappointed that boxing hero Manny Pacquiao, the flag bearer of the Philippine delegation got only a few seconds exposure but in the US, NBC gave Pacquiao the recognition he deserved.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who watched the delayed telecast of the spectacular opening ceremony said he was “very proud to see him (Pacquiao) carrying the flag and it was nice on American television.”

Arum said Pacquiao was given a pretty good play-up by the NBC anchors which underscored the fact that it was “a good, smart move” having him as the Philippine flag-bearer which is what President Arroyo had personally requested.

Veteran journalist Percy Della reported that NBC’s famed anchorman Bob Costas praised Pacquiao as one of the best boxers in the world and a hero among the people of the Philippines and said he was tapped to carry the Philippine flag “because of his stature in that country.”

ARCHES NATIONAL PARK, Iconic stone arch collapses August 4, 2008

Now it is gone. Here's a Video Uploaded by klickermann

ARCHES NATIONAL PARK, Utah - One of the largest and most photographed arches in Arches National Park has collapsed.

Paul Henderson, the park's chief of interpretation, said Wall Arch collapsed Monday Aug, 4, 2008.

The arch is along Devils Garden Trail, one of the most popular in the park. For years, the arch has been a favorite stopping point for photographers.

Henderson said the arch was claimed by forces that will eventually destroy others in the park: gravity and erosion.

"They all let go after a while," he said Friday.

He said it's the first collapse of a major arch in the park since nearby Landscape Arch fell in 1991. No one has reported seeing it fall.

Like others in the park, Wall Arch was formed by entrada sandstone that was whittled down over time into its distinctive and photogenic formation.

The arch, first reported and named in 1948, was more than 33 feet tall and 71 feet across. It ranked 12th in size among the park's estimated 2,000 arches.

Rock has continued to fall from the remaining arms of the arch forcing the closure of a portion of the trail.

Officials from the National Park Service and the Utah Geological Survey visited the site Thursday, noting stress fractures in the remaining formation. The trail won't be opened until the debris is cleared away and it's safe for visitors, Henderson said.

MANNY PACQUIAO's Own Experience as Philippine Flag-bearer at the Beijing 2008 Olympics in 'Kumbinasyon'

Here's an article that was written by Manny Pacquiao himself (written in Tagalog) on his amazing experience as Philippine flag-bearer and his meeting with Kobe Bryant,Jason Kidd and Lebron James.
"Kumbinasyon"

By Manny Pacquiao

GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH

PhilBoxing.com
10 Aug 2008

God Bless Us All.

BERNIE MAC Dies at Age 50 from Complications of Pneumonia today Saturday morning August 9, 2008

Bernie Mac, Hollywood actor and a comedian died Saturday morning August 9, 2008 due to complications of pneumonia. He was known as one of the "Ocean's Eleven" gang in the casino heist caper "Ocean's Eleven" and its sequels.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.

Recently, Mac's brand of comedy caught him flack when he was heckled during a surprise appearance at a July fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate and fellow Chicagoan Barack Obama.

Toward the end of a 10-minute standup routine, Mac joked about menopause, sexual infidelity and promiscuity, and used occasional crude language. The performance earned him a rebuke from Obama's campaign.

But despite controversy or difficulties, in his words, Mac was always a performer.

"Wherever I am, I have to play," he said in 2002. "I have to put on a good show."

Mac worked his way to Hollywood success from an impoverished upbringing on Chicago's South Side. He began doing standup as a child, and his film career started with a small role as a club doorman in the Damon Wayans comedy "Mo' Money" in 1992. In 1996, he appeared in the Spike Lee drama "Get on the Bus."

He was one of "The Original Kings of Comedy" in the 2000 documentary of that title that brought a new generation of black standup comedy stars to a wider audience.

Mac went on to star in the hugely popular "Ocean's Eleven" franchise with Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

His turn with Ashton Kutcher in 2005's "Guess Who" topped the box office. It was a comedy remake of the classic Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn drama "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" — with Mac as the black dad who's shocked that his daughter is marrying a white man.

Mac also had starring roles in "Bad Santa," "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" and "Transformers."

In the late 1990s, he had a recurring role in "Moesha," the UPN network comedy starring pop star Brandy.

The comedian drew critical and popular acclaim with his Fox television series "The Bernie Mac Show," which aired more than 100 episodes from 2001 to 2006.

The series about a man's adventures raising his sister's three children, won a Peabody Award in 2002. At the time, judges wrote they chose the sitcom for transcending "race and class while lifting viewers with laughter, compassion — and cool."

The show garnered Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for Mac.

"But television handcuffs you, man," he said in a 2001 Associated Press interview. "Now everyone telling me what I CAN'T do, what I CAN say, what I SHOULD do, and asking, `Are blacks gonna be mad at you? Are whites gonna accept you?'"

He also was nominated for a Grammy award for best comedy album in 2001 along with his "The Original Kings of Comedy" co-stars, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Cedric The Entertainer.

In 2007, Mac told David Letterman on CBS' "Late Show" that he planned to retire soon.

"I'm going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit," Mac told Letterman. "I missed a lot of things, you know. I was a street performer for two years. I went into clubs in 1977."

Mac was born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough on Oct. 5, 1957, in Chicago. He grew up on the city's South Side, living with his mother and grandparents. His grandfather was the deacon of a Baptist church.

In his 2004 memoir, "Maybe You Never Cry Again," Mac wrote about having a poor childhood — eating bologna for dinner — and a strict, no-nonsense upbringing.

"I came from a place where there wasn't a lot of joy," Mac told the AP in 2001. "I decided to try to make other people laugh when there wasn't a lot of things to laugh about."

Mac's mother died of cancer when he was 16. In his book, Mac said she was a support for him and told him he would surprise everyone when he grew up.

"Woman believed in me," he wrote. "She believed in me long before I believed."

MGM Mirage Las Vegas gets CityCenter financing

My Personal Photo
This shot am at I15 Interstate Freeway

This shot am at Las Vegas Blvd

MGM Mirage Inc, the world's second-largest casino operator, said on Tuesday it has lined up more than half of current financing needs for its massive CityCenter project on the Las Vegas Strip and its shares rose more than 7 percent. The financing news outweighed a 69 percent decline in MGM's quarterly profit as the slow U.S. economy hit spending in Las Vegas. Other large casino companies have also reported deteriorating quarterly earnings, including Las Vegas Sands Corp and Boyd Gaming Corp, which last week said it would halt construction of its partially built $4.8 billion Strip project called Echelon.
MGM is developing a number of properties, including the CityCenter in Las Vegas and a $5 billion casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Last year it opened the MGM Grand Detroit and its first property in Macau, China's gambling haven.

The company last August agreed to sell half of the CityCenter development of hotels, condos and retail outlets to Dubai World, which also plans to acquire a stake of up to 20 percent in MGM itself.

MGM said on Tuesday that it and Dubai World are currently working on $3 billion financing package for CityCenter, with commitments so far totaling $1.65 billion from certain banks.

MGM shares, which had fallen 70 percent since last October, rose $2.24, or 7.2 percent, to $33.24 in late-morning trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

Some analysts, however, are still concerned about CityCenter.

Lehman Brother analyst Felicia Hendrix said in a research note that MGM and Dubai World could be required to fund the balance of CityCenter costs with their own equity.

MGM, which operates resorts including the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay and Circus Circus in Las Vegas, said second-quarter net income fell to $113.1 million, or 40 cents per share, from $360.2 million, or $1.22 per share, a year earlier. The 2007 quarter included $63 million from condominium sales.

The results fell short of the 42 cents a share forecast by analysts, as compiled by Reuters Estimates.

"I think the results were soft, but not as bad as some people were expecting," said Susquehanna Financial analyst Robert LaFleur.

Net non-gambling revenue was flat, while earnings at high-end resorts like Bellagio and Mandalay Bay actually increased from a year earlier.

"This seems to be a concentrated low-end slowdown," LaFleur said.

The earnings miss was driven mostly by weakness at the Borgata resort in Atlantic City, and MGM's Macau casino, UBS Investment analyst Robin Farley said in a research note.

Quarterly revenue fell 2 percent to $1.9 billion, in line with the average analyst estimate of $1.88 billion.

The company's overall gaming revenue fell 4 percent. Slot machine revenue was down 2 percent overall and fell 10 percent on the Las Vegas Strip.

Revenue from MGM's hotel rooms fell 6 percent, with a 5 percent decrease in Las Vegas Strip revenue per available room, the main measure of growth in the hotel industry.

Joy Division (Love Will Tear Us Apart) Formed in the wake of the punk explosion

Joy Division one of my Favorite New Wave, Punk, Alternetive Band.

John Peel Session for the BBC in 1979.
The original band footage is a mixture of a performance video shot by the band for the single release (minus the damaged shots) and live concert excerpts from Plank, Brussels and the Apollo, Manchester.

New Order - Love Will Tear Us Apart - Finsbury Park

Joy Division were an English rock band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. Originally named Warsaw, the band primarily consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals and occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards), Peter Hook (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums and percussion).

Joy Division rapidly evolved from their initial punk rock influences, to develop a sound and style that pioneered the post-punk movement of the late 1970s. According to music critic Jon Savage, the band "were not punk but were directly inspired by its energy." Their self-released 1978 debut EP, An Ideal for Living, caught the attention of the Manchester television personality Tony Wilson. Joy Division's debut album, Unknown Pleasures, was released in 1979 on Wilson's independent record label Factory Records, and drew critical acclaim from the British press. Despite the band's growing success, vocalist Ian Curtis was beset with depression and personal difficulties, including a dissolving marriage and his diagnosis with epilepsy. Curtis found it increasingly difficult to perform at live concerts, and often had seizures during performances.

In May 1980, on the eve of the band's first American tour, Curtis, overwhelmed with depression, committed suicide. Joy Division's posthumously released second album, Closer (1980), and the single "Love Will Tear Us Apart" became the band's highest charting releases. After the death of Curtis, the remaining members reformed as New Order, achieving critical and commercial success.
